Saxophone Sextets

Bond Street
Thomas ‘Fats’ Waller--------------------------------3¼ mins

Bond Street is from Thomas ‘Fats’ Waller’s London Suite. The suite was written towards the end of his career during a stay in England and was reputedly an attempt by Waller to shake off the brilliant yet lighthearted jazz piano persona he had so successfully acquired over the years. He wanted to be taken as a composer of more depth and the suite was intended to be a step in that direction. Whether or not he was successful in making the transition is debatable as the pieces or movements of the suite are still full of classic Fats Waller wit and musical charm.
This arrangement of Bond Street will readily fit alongside its sister arrangements of Piccadilly (PaP06011) and Soho (PaP06013) also from the London Suite and published by Pack a Punch Publications.

They Didn't Believe Me
Jerome Kern-----------------------------------------4½ mins

This arrangement is based on Jerome Kern’s beautiful song from 1914 originally written for the musical The Girl from Utah. It has become both a classic for singers and a standard in jazz circles. They Didn’t Believe Me was one of many songs adopted by soldiers in the First World War trenches and in a slightly different guise featured in Richard Attenborough’s 1969 film Oh! What a Lovely War.

This new arrangement starts with a rubato-like introduction with many pauses then after settling into a regular tempo eventually presents the main theme as a medium swing. This sextet makes the most if its jazzy swing style, all parts take the lead at some point and there is no improvisation involved.

This arrangement is based on the traditional gospel hymn When the Saints Go Marching In where the familiar chorus is presented in a straightforward bright and celebratory style. The verse, by contrast, tends to be deconstructed and, using quotation amongst other things, turns some unexpected corners. Overall the shapes and figures are very playable and easily achievable by a developing ensemble. [Arranged by Adrian Budgen]

Boccherini’s Minuet from his String Quintet in E major is extremely well known and has been used widely in mainstream media as well as in the recital hall. It featured in the black comedy The Ladykillers from Ealing Studios in 1955 which is where the title of this arrangement is derived. Lightness and poise is the key to the performance of this music and the arrangement here helps to achieve this through a fairly transparent approach. All the performers need to bring to the table is subtle and delicate playing and a balanced ensemble. [Arranged by Adrian Budgen]

There is over 120 years between the reworking in this arrangement and the original notation of the version of Strawberry Fair on which it is based. The pop ballad style presents an effective account of the folk song and extends it by refracting its roots through a mainstream contemporary musical prism. Most parts get sight of the tune and Tenor 1 has a solo section marked optional ad lib à la Snake Davis. [Arranged by Adrian Budgen]

A Merry Assembly of Countryfolk
Ludwig van Beethoven--------------------------------6 mins

The rich and familiar melodic lines of the third movement of Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony provide the foundation for this arrangement. It has been designed to be faithful to the original at the same time as sympathetic to the features and idiosyncrasies of the saxophone. Marion Scott describes the movement as a ‘Peasants’ Festival with its delicious portrait of the country band’, so what better than to extend it to a sextet of lip-smacking saxophonists.
Please note a minimum of four Alto Saxes are required to cover various divisi sections. [Arranged by Adrian Budgen]

The ancient folksong concerning a valiant knight and his encounter with a dragon has been given a twenty-first century treatment here in the form of a jazz waltz. All parts have sight of the main theme at some point and the main presentation of the folksong melody revolves around a contrasting interplay between a Brubeck-like jazz waltz vamp and some warm sustained chords which exploit the gorgeous natural honeyed sound of the sax ensemble. This is in a jazzy style with swung quavers and no improvisation. [Arranged by Adrian Budgen]

Research revealed conflicting information regarding the source of this traditional folksong so we can be certain only that it travelled well throughout the British Isles and quite probably beyond. This arrangement places the jaunty tune against various bridges, links and episodes that take the ensemble on a bright and breezy escapade. The returning tune needs to be played with a swagger or with attitude in the contemporary vernacular!
An alternative part is included so that Tenor 1 can also be played on an Alto Sax. [Arranged by Adrian Budgen]
